Natural Bridge, Neil Island — low tide timings and coral formations

Natural Bridge — locally still called Howrah Bridge — is a massive living coral formation on the western shore of Neil Island. You do not swim here; you walk the exposed reef at low tide looking at brittle stars and sea cucumbers in the tidal pools. The catch: if you show up at high tide, the bridge is underwater and unreachable.

Tide dependency — the only rule that matters

You cannot access Natural Bridge at high tide. The path requires walking across the dead coral reef flat which is completely submerged twice a day. Check the local tide table before you leave your hotel, or ask your cab driver — the best time is the two-hour window around the day's lowest tide.

  • Sunrise (05:30–06:30) is often ideal if the tide aligns, avoiding the heat
  • The walk is jagged and slippery; it is not suited for anyone with severe mobility issues
  • Do not touch the live corals in the tidal pools or pick up the sea cucumbers

Photography and erosion

The bridge is actively eroding. Years of cyclonic weather and unchecked footfall are weakening the arch.

  • Do not attempt to climb the arch formation
  • The best light is early morning when the sun hits the eastern face, or late afternoon
  • Drones require prior written permission, and locals will report illegal flying

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Natural Bridge?

It depends entirely on the tide. You must go during low tide when the reef is exposed. If the tide is low at sunrise (05:30–06:30), that is the best window for photography and avoiding crowds.

Is it difficult to walk to Natural Bridge?

The walk is about 1.5 km over dead coral, rocks, and slippery tidal pools. It requires balance and proper footwear with straps — do not attempt it in flip-flops or bare feet.

Do I need a guide for Natural Bridge?

Guides wait near the entrance offering to show you live coral, starfish and sea cucumbers for ₹200–₹300. They are not mandatory, but helpful if you don't know what to look for in the tidal pools.

Are there photography restrictions at Natural Bridge?

Standard photography is fine, but flying drones is strictly prohibited without official permission. Do not climb the coral arch for photos.
