So, you’re thinking about Neil Island? Good choice. While many visitors make a beeline straight for Havelock, we locals have a soft spot for Neil (now officially Shaheed Dweep). It’s the chill younger sibling in the family. The roads are quieter, the beaches feel more personal, and life just moves a little slower here. And the snorkeling? It's some of the most accessible and rewarding in the Andamans.

The water here is incredibly clear, especially from October to May. What we love about snorkeling in Neil is that you don’t always need to book a boat trip to a faraway reef. Some of the best spots are right off the main beaches, which means you can just grab a mask, walk into the sea, and start exploring.

The Best Snorkeling Spots on Neil Island

You’re spoiled for choice here, but each beach offers a slightly different experience. Here are the ones we always recommend to friends visiting the island.

Bharatpur Beach

This is the main hub, and for good reason. Located right next to the jetty, Bharatpur Beach is the island’s water sports center. The bay is protected, making the water calm and shallow—absolutely perfect for beginners or families with kids. You can walk out for quite a distance and the water will only be waist-deep.

The marine life starts almost immediately. We’ve all spent hours here just floating around, watching parrotfish, damselfish, and clownfish go about their day. The coral here is surprisingly healthy for a spot with so much activity. You can rent snorkel gear from dozens of vendors right on the sand. They also offer glass-bottom boat rides, which are great for seeing the reef without getting wet.

Laxmanpur Beach

Known worldwide for its spectacular sunsets, Laxmanpur Beach (specifically Beach No. 1) is also a fantastic, slightly more adventurous snorkeling spot. The best snorkeling isn’t on the main sandy stretch but further along, towards the natural rock bridge (also called the Howrah Bridge by locals).

During low tide, the receding water reveals countless rock pools teeming with life. You can find tiny fish, crabs, and starfish trapped in these natural aquariums. For proper snorkeling, it's best to go when the tide is a bit higher. We find the area around the bridge has some lovely coral patches and is usually much quieter than Bharatpur. It’s a bit of a walk over the dead coral rock bed, so wear reef shoes!

Sitapur Beach

On the opposite side of the island is Sitapur Beach, the "sunrise beach." It faces the open sea, so the waves can be a little stronger here, making it better for confident swimmers. The beach itself is a beautiful crescent of sand flanked by limestone formations.

The snorkeling here is a different experience. Because it’s less sheltered, you might encounter different types of fish. The best spots are along the rocky edges of the beach. It’s the least crowded of the three, and there have been days where we’ve had the entire underwater world to ourselves. Just be mindful of the currents and maybe check with a local guide before you head in, especially if the sea looks rough.

Tips for a Great Snorkel

A little prep can make your underwater adventure so much better. Here’s our simple advice:

• Go at the right time: The best water clarity is usually during high tide or when the tide is coming in. The water is calmest in the mornings.
• Gear check: You can rent gear everywhere, but it varies in quality. Before you pay, check that the mask forms a good seal on your face and the snorkel isn’t cracked.
• Don’t touch: This is the golden rule. Corals are extremely fragile living animals. Touching them or, even worse, standing on them can kill them. Admire them from a distance so they’re still there for the next person to enjoy.
• Go with a guide: If you’re a first-timer, hiring a local guide is a great idea. They know all the best spots to find specific fish and will keep you safe.
