Planning your first trip to Andaman? This honest 5-day itinerary focuses on practical advice, realistic costs, and what truly matters for an unforgettable experience.
This guide is for you if you're planning your first trip to the Andaman Islands and want a realistic, practical 5-day itinerary. We’ll cover the must-dos, what to realistically expect, typical costs, and even what you might consider skipping to make the most of your time. Our aim is to help you navigate the islands like a local expert, ensuring a smooth and memorable first experience without any surprises.
Day 1: Arrival in Port Blair & Historical Reflection
Your Andaman adventure begins as you land at Veer Savarkar International Airport (IXZ) in Port Blair. Once you've collected your luggage and stepped out, you’ll find pre-paid taxi counters and auto-rickshaws readily available for your transfer to your accommodation. Most hotels in Port Blair are within a 15-30 minute drive from the airport, depending on traffic.
- Morning/Afternoon (Arrival & Check-in): Aim for an early to mid-day flight arrival so you have time to settle in. Check into your hotel and take some time to relax and freshen up after your journey. Lunch can be at a local eatery near your hotel; ask your hotel staff for recommendations for authentic South Indian or seafood thalis.
- Late Afternoon (Cellular Jail): Visit the iconic Cellular Jail. This national monument holds immense historical significance, telling the story of India's freedom struggle. Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the complex thoroughly. It’s a sobering but essential experience. Entry fees are typically around Rs 30-50 per person. Guided tours are often available at the entrance for a small additional charge, which can enhance your understanding.
- Evening (Sound & Light Show): The Sound and Light Show at Cellular Jail is a popular evening activity. There are usually two shows, often in Hindi and English. The first show typically starts around 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM IST, and the second around 6:45 PM or 7:15 PM IST. Confirm timings locally upon arrival as they can vary seasonally. The show provides a moving narrative of the jail's history. Tickets are generally around Rs 50-100 per person. Pre-booking might be advisable during peak season.
- Dinner: Enjoy dinner at a restaurant in Port Blair. Many options are available, from multi-cuisine to specific seafood restaurants. Budget for Rs 500-1000 per person for a decent meal.
Common Pitfalls: Not booking Cellular Jail tickets or Sound & Light Show tickets in advance during peak season, leading to long queues or unavailability. Ensure you have comfortable walking shoes.
Day 2: Ferry to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) & Beach Bliss
Today, you’ll journey to Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep, famous for its pristine beaches. This is a key part of any Andaman itinerary.
- Morning (Ferry to Havelock): Head to the Phoenix Bay Jetty or Haddo Jetty in Port Blair to catch your ferry to Havelock. Government ferries and private cruises operate on this route. Private ferries are generally faster and more comfortable. Travel time is typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the vessel. Early morning ferries (e.g., 6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM) are popular. Ferry tickets can range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,800 per person for a one-way trip on a private ferry, depending on the class of travel. Book your ferry tickets well in advance, especially during peak season, as they sell out quickly. Arrive at the jetty at least 45-60 minutes before departure for check-in procedures.
- Afternoon (Check-in & Radhanagar Beach): Upon arrival at Havelock Jetty (Govind Nagar), transfer to your resort. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available. After checking in and having lunch, head straight to Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7), often ranked among Asia's best beaches. Spend your afternoon swimming, sunbathing, or simply walking along the soft white sands. There are changing rooms and basic refreshment stalls available. No entry fee for the beach.
- Evening (Sunset & Relaxation): Witness the breathtaking sunset at Radhanagar Beach. It's a truly magical experience. Afterward, return to your resort for dinner and relax. Many resorts have their own restaurants, or you can explore local eateries in the market area.
Common Pitfalls: Not booking ferry tickets in advance can disrupt your entire itinerary. Missing the sunset at Radhanagar is a missed opportunity. Remember to carry your ID proof for ferry travel.
Day 3: Water Activities & Elephant Beach
Today is all about experiencing Havelock's vibrant underwater world and stunning coral reefs.
- Morning (Snorkelling/Scuba Diving at Elephant Beach): Take a boat from Havelock Jetty to Elephant Beach. The boat ride typically takes about 15-20 minutes, followed by a short walk through the mangroves to reach the beach. Elephant Beach is renowned for its shallow, clear waters and abundant coral reefs, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling and sea walking. If you’re interested in trying scuba diving, many operators offer 'Discover Scuba Diving' programs here or at other dedicated sites. A package including boat transfer and snorkelling can cost around Rs 1,000-1,500 per person. Scuba diving (for non-certified divers) typically starts from Rs 3,500-6,000 depending on the depth and duration. Allow 3-4 hours for this activity.
- Afternoon (Leisure & Kala Pathar Beach): After your water activities, return to your resort for lunch and some relaxation. In the late afternoon, you can visit Kala Pathar Beach, known for its picturesque stretch of white sand and black rocks. It's a quieter alternative to Radhanagar, perfect for a peaceful stroll or watching the waves.
- Evening (Local Cuisine): Explore the local food scene. Havelock has a good selection of cafes and restaurants offering fresh seafood and various cuisines. Budget for Rs 600-1,200 per person for dinner.
Common Pitfalls: Not carrying enough cash, as ATMs can be few and far between or sometimes out of service on Havelock. Not wearing appropriate sun protection (hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen). Ensure you book your water activities with a reputable, certified operator.
Day 4: Return to Port Blair & Local Exploration
It’s time to head back to Port Blair, but the exploration isn't over.
- Morning (Ferry back to Port Blair): Catch an afternoon ferry back to Port Blair from Havelock Jetty. This allows you a relaxed morning on Havelock, perhaps a final dip in the sea or some souvenir shopping. Check-out time from most resorts is typically 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM. You can often arrange for luggage storage if your ferry is later. Ferry tickets will be similar to your inbound journey, Rs 1,000-1,800 per person. The journey takes 1.5-2.5 hours.
- Afternoon (Chidiya Tapu Sunset): Upon reaching Port Blair, check back into your hotel. In the late afternoon, embark on a scenic drive to Chidiya Tapu (Bird Island), located about 25 km south of Port Blair. This spot is renowned for its stunning sunset views. The drive itself is beautiful, passing through dense forests. Allow 1-1.5 hours for travel and another 1-1.5 hours to enjoy the sunset. A taxi for this round trip might cost around Rs 1,500-2,000 depending on your negotiation and vehicle type.
- Evening (Shopping & Dinner): After sunset, head back to Port Blair. You can explore Aberdeen Bazaar for some souvenir shopping – look for shell crafts, local spices, and wooden artifacts. For dinner, try some of Port Blair’s well-known seafood restaurants.
Common Pitfalls: Not pre-booking your return ferry can leave you stranded. Underestimating travel time to Chidiya Tapu, especially with traffic. Some shops might close early, so plan your shopping accordingly.
Day 5: Depart from Port Blair
Your 5-day Andaman adventure concludes today.
- Morning (Leisure/Departure): Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for a leisurely breakfast or some last-minute souvenir shopping. If your flight is later in the day, consider a quick visit to Samudrika Marine Museum (Naval Marine Museum) or the Anthropological Museum to learn more about the islands' marine life and indigenous tribes. Entry fees are typically Rs 20-50 per person for these museums. Allow 1-1.5 hours for each.
- Afternoon (Departure): Head to Veer Savarkar International Airport for your departure. Ensure you reach the airport at least 2 hours before your domestic flight.
Common Pitfalls: Not accounting for potential airport security queues or traffic, especially during peak hours. Double-check your flight timings and ensure all your documents are in order.

What to Consider Skipping (for a first-timer on 5 days)
With just 5 days, it’s important to prioritize. For a first-timer, we generally recommend focusing on Port Blair and Havelock to avoid rushing. Consider skipping:
- Baratang Island (Limestone Caves & Mud Volcano): While interesting, it’s a full-day trip (10-12 hours) from Port Blair involving early mornings, convoy travel, and multiple transfers. It can be tiring and eats into precious time better spent on Havelock for a first-timer.
- Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): While beautiful, adding Neil Island usually requires at least an extra day or two to do it justice without feeling rushed. For 5 days, focus on Port Blair and Havelock for a more relaxed experience.
- Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) & North Bay Island: While easily accessible from Port Blair via a half-day boat trip, if your priority is pristine beaches and water activities, Havelock offers more. If you have extra time on Day 1 or Day 5, this can be a good add-on, but it's not a 'must-do' over Havelock.
