Kalapathar Beach, Havelock — sunrise timings, route and photography

Kalapathar — 'black rock' — is Havelock's east-facing beach and the only sensible sunrise on the island. It is narrow, fringed with driftwood and dark rock, and almost empty before 07:00. The drive there along the coast is half the reason to go.

The route and what it costs

  • Cab, jetty → Kalapathar one way: ₹700 – ₹900; return with wait ₹1,200 – ₹1,500
  • Scooter is the better option here — ₹500 – ₹700 per day and the coastal road is easy
  • Most Havelock resorts on the Kalapathar road are a 5–10 minute walk from the sand
  • Combine with Radhanagar the same day: sunrise east, sunset west, one full-day cab

Photography — where the shots are

  • Driftwood and exposed black rock at the northern end at low tide
  • Backlit palm line from the sand at 05:40–06:10 gives the postcard frame
  • Check the tide table: high tide swallows the rock shelf entirely
  • No drone flying without written permission

What Kalapathar is not

It is not a swimming beach and it has no facilities to speak of. Come for the first hour of the day, then go elsewhere. Anyone selling you a 'full day at Kalapathar' has never been there.
