Beginner's Guide to Scuba Diving in Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

For many travelers, scuba diving in Havelock Island is the single biggest reason to visit Andaman. The reefs here offer some of the best dive conditions in India, especially for beginners who want their first underwater experience to be safe and magical.

Why Havelock is perfect for first-time divers

  • Protected sites with gentle currents and decent visibility.
  • A large number of dive centers with certified instructors and training pools.
  • A tourism ecosystem built around diving: early‑morning schedules, breakfast after dives, and plenty of stories at cafés.

When should beginners dive?

The ideal diving window is October to May, with December to April being the sweet spot for calm seas and clearer water. Monsoon months see reduced operations, rougher seas, and unpredictable visibility.

Types of dives for beginners

Try Dive / Introductory Dive

  • No certification required.
  • Short training at shallow depth, then a guided dive with an instructor handling most of the work.
  • Good if you just want to tick "scuba in Andaman" off your list.

Open Water Course (3–4 days)

  • Internationally recognized certification that allows you to dive up to 18 m anywhere in the world.
  • Includes pool sessions, theory, and multiple open‑water dives.
  • Ideal if you know you'll want to dive again after this trip.

A lot of visitors underestimate how addictive diving can be—many come for a Try Dive and end up staying longer to do a course.

Choosing a dive center

When picking a dive center, look beyond price:

  • Check if instructors are certified and if the center is affiliated with a recognized training agency.
  • Ask about group size—smaller groups mean more attention for beginners.
  • Confirm whether equipment is well maintained and included in the quoted price.
  • See how honestly they talk about weather and visibility; if they promise "perfect conditions" in peak monsoon, that's a red flag.

Safety tips from a local

  • Do not drink alcohol the night before your dive; sleep matters more than you think.
  • Inform your instructor about any medical conditions. If you have serious issues, get a doctor's clearance before the trip.
  • Listen carefully to the briefing. Underwater, trust your instructor and hand signals.
  • Plan your flights: avoid flying for at least 18–24 hours after your last dive to reduce decompression risk.
