Andaman Goat Cheese "Merom Tua" Goes Global, Featured at World Competition in

Sri Vijaya Puram locals are buzzing with excitement after Andaman's very own goat milk cheese, "Merom Tua," made its international debut at the 4th Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026 (World Cheese Competition) in São Paulo, Brazil. The prestigious event, held from April 16 to 19, 2026, marked India’s first official participation, coordinated by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

The "Merom Tua" cheese, a truly local product, was among India’s official entries, putting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the global cheese map for the very first time. This is a huge step for our small islands, showcasing our unique produce to an international audience of cheesemakers, dairy experts, and industry professionals from nearly 30 countries.

A Global Stage for Local Products

Dr. K.A. Naveen, Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) for the A&N Administration, was part of the five-member Indian delegation. According to Nicobar Times, Dr. Naveen proudly presented the artisanal goat milk cheese from our islands. He also talked about the big potential of goat milk-based products, like artisanal cheese and even high-quality TFM soaps. These products aren't just tasty; they’re designed to create better income opportunities for our tribal and rural communities here in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The international visitors and dairy experts at the competition really loved what they saw from the islands. Dr. Naveen also highlighted how the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a disease-free environment, making our dairy initiatives even more special. He emphasized how small-scale dairy projects can spark entrepreneurship, empower our communities economically, and build sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.

Learning and Growing for the Future

Beyond showcasing our local talents, the Indian delegation also took the opportunity to learn from the best. On the final day of their visit, they toured Estancia Silvania, a top dairy farm in Brazil. This educational exchange focused on regenerative dairy farming, A2 milk production, and advanced breeding technologies. It’s clear that this experience will bring back valuable knowledge to help our local dairy industry grow and innovate.

This international exposure for "Merom Tua" cheese is more than just about a product; it's about recognizing the hard work and potential of our local communities. It shows the world what the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can achieve on a global scale.
