Andaman vs Maldives — the honest side-by-side comparison

If you are an Indian traveller choosing between an Andaman trip and a Maldives trip, the decision is rarely about the sea — both have warm water, white sand and reefs. The decision is really about three things: total time including flights, total cost for your dates, and whether you want a resort bubble or an island-hopping experience. This guide walks through all three honestly, with 2026 numbers from our Port Blair team and cross-referenced against what Maldives resorts are quoting right now.

Total trip time, including the journey

This is the single biggest differentiator and the most common regret we hear from Maldives honeymooners.

  • Andaman: fly Chennai/Bangalore/Hyderabad to Port Blair in 2.5–3 hours, walk out of Veer Savarkar Airport, and you are at your first hotel in 30 minutes. Total door-to-door from a tier-1 Indian city is roughly 6–7 hours for a 4-night trip.
  • Maldives: fly to Malé in 4–5 hours from India. Then add a 25–50 minute speedboat transfer or a 45-minute seaplane flight to your resort. Speedboat rides stop after dark; seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your India → Malé flight lands after 16:00 local, you will sleep in Malé or Hulhumale that night and lose a full day on the resort.
  • A 5-night Maldives honeymoon realistically consumes 7 nights of leave because of the seaplane scheduling. A 5-night Andaman trip consumes 5.5 nights.

Cost per couple, same dates, same standard

Both destinations are sold as 'luxury'. The math behind that word is very different.

  • Andaman, 5 nights mid-range: ₹1.0–1.5 L per couple including flights from Chennai, ferry tickets, 3-star beach resorts, transfers, one scuba dive and a Neil Island day trip.
  • Andaman, 5 nights premium: ₹1.8–2.5 L with a 4-star beachfront property like SeaShell Havelock or Munjoh Ocean Resort, plus upper-deck ferry seats.
  • Maldives, 5 nights 4-star water-villa: ₹4.5–6 L including flights, seaplane and full-board. Most couples add ₹60k–₹1L on extras (alcohol, spa, excursions).
  • Maldives, 5 nights 5-star branded resort: ₹7–12 L. This is where the 'Maldives luxury' reputation comes from — and what you are paying for is the room and the seaplane logistics, not really the food or the experience.
  • Verdict: for ₹2.5 L you get a 5-night Andaman honeymoon. The same budget covers 2 nights at a 3-star Maldives guesthouse in Hulhumale and a day trip to a sandbank. They are genuinely different products at that price.

What the experience actually feels like

Most Andaman clients have already considered Maldives before booking us. The honest answer on the experience side:

  • Maldives is a single-resort experience. You land, you take a boat, you stay in one property for the entire trip, and you rarely leave it. The reef is your front yard. It is the most relaxing holiday format in the world and the most repetitive.
  • Andaman is an island-hopping experience. You can stay in 3 different islands in 5 nights — Port Blair for the history, Havelock for the beaches and diving, Neil for the quiet. Each day has a different ferry, a different beach, a different reef. It is more work and more variety.
  • If your idea of a honeymoon is not leaving the room except to walk to the dinner table: Maldives.
  • If your idea of a honeymoon is doing different things each day and seeing a new place every morning: Andaman.

Water sports and diving, side by side

Both destinations have warm water and coral reefs. The shape of those reefs is different and that matters for what kind of marine activity you want.

  • Maldives is famous for manta rays, whale sharks and big-game diving. The atolls are open ocean — visibility can hit 40m+, drift dives are common, currents are strong.
  • Andaman has gentler reef diving — better for first-time divers, snorkellers and family trips. Nemo Reef at Havelock, North Bay near Port Blair and Dixon’s Pinnacle are the headline sites.
  • Sea walks (helmet diving) exist in both destinations. Andaman's North Bay sea walk is cheaper and does not require swimming.
  • Snorkelling: Andaman has it accessible from the beach at multiple points. Maldives snorkelling is mostly off a boat from your resort.

Food, drink, language, mobile data

  • Food: Andaman serves north-Indian, South Indian, seafood and Bengali across every island. Vegetarian travellers are well-covered. Maldives resorts are buffet-heavy; à la carte Indian food is rare and expensive outside a handful of branded properties.
  • Alcohol: Andaman allows beer in licensed restaurants and resorts. Maldives is mostly dry outside resort bars.
  • Language: Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and English all work in Andaman. Dhivehi plus English in Maldives.
  • Money: Andaman is cash + UPI everywhere. Maldives is USD cash or card; UPI does not work.
  • Mobile data: Indian SIMs work in Andaman (the islands are Indian territory). In Maldives you pay $20–30 for a tourist SIM or use resort Wi-Fi.

Safety, family-friendliness and accessibility

  • Andaman is fully Indian territory — Indian law, Indian hospitals, Indian currency, Indian embassies do not apply because you do not need one. Medical evacuation to Chennai is straightforward.
  • Maldives is a separate country. Medical evacuation to Sri Lanka or India in a serious case.
  • For families with kids under 10, Andaman wins on activity variety (Cellular Jail, light-and-sound show, glass-bottom boat, snorkelling, mangrove boat at Baratang). Maldives has limited on-island activities for children outside the resort.
  • For senior travellers who want to do very little: Maldives water villa with a butler is genuinely easier than Andaman's ferry-and-temple schedule.

When Maldives is the right answer (not often, but it exists)

  • You have 4–6 nights of leave and want zero logistics. Just fly, boat, sleep, eat, repeat.
  • You specifically want a water villa — over-the-water bedroom with a glass floor and a ladder into the lagoon. Nothing in Andaman matches this.
  • You want guaranteed manta/whale-shark encounters. The atolls are more reliable for big marine life than the Andaman reef.
  • Your dates fall in the Maldives dry season (November–April) and you want peak sun.

When Andaman is the right answer (most Indian honeymooners, honestly)

  • You want to do more than just one resort — different islands, different reefs, different food.
  • Budget matters. A 5-night Andaman trip for two is roughly the cost of a 3-night Maldives trip.
  • You want Indian food available without a special request.
  • You are a non-swimmer who still wants snorkelling, sea walks and beginner scuba. Andaman's operators are set up for this. Maldives resort dives are priced for confident divers.
  • You are travelling with parents or kids. The variety matters and the cost difference is brutal with a family of four.
  • You want flexibility to extend, cut short or change islands if the weather forces a re-plan. Andaman is forgiving. Maldives seaplanes and pre-paid resorts are not.

Can you combine both? Yes, but rarely worth it

The cheapest meaningful combo is 3 nights Maldives + 3 nights Andaman, totalling around ₹6–8 L per couple. The Maldives half is the 3-star guesthouse-and-day-trip format in Hulhumale; the Andaman half is Havelock + Neil. It works for a 9-night anniversary trip but is overkill for a first honeymoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is Andaman cheaper than Maldives for Indian honeymooners?

Yes, significantly. A 5-night Andaman trip from India costs ₹1.0–2.5 L per couple mid-range. The same 5 nights in a Maldives water villa costs ₹4.5–8 L per couple. The price gap widens for longer trips and for families.

Which is better for a honeymoon — Andaman or Maldives?

Depends on the type of honeymoon you want. Maldives is best for couples who want a private water villa and to do nothing for a week. Andaman is best for couples who want variety — different islands, different beaches, different activities each day. Most Indian honeymooners who book with us choose Andaman because of the budget-to-experience ratio.

Do Indians need a passport for Andaman?

No. Indian citizens need only a government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, driving licence or passport) to visit the Andaman Islands. The Maldives offers a free on-arrival visa for Indian citizens, valid for 30 days.

How long is the flight from India to Andaman vs Maldives?

Direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair take 2.5–3 hours. Flights from the same cities to Malé take 4–5 hours. After landing in Malé, you add a 25–50 minute speedboat or 45-minute seaplane transfer to your resort. Total door-to-door, Maldives is typically 6–8 hours longer than Andaman.

Which has better scuba diving — Andaman or Maldives?

Different products. Maldives has stronger big-game diving (manta rays, whale sharks, drift dives, 40m+ visibility) and is the better choice for experienced divers. Andaman has better beginner diving, sea walks for non-swimmers, and reef sites that are easy to access without a liveaboard. For first-time divers and families, Andaman is the easier product.

Can you drink alcohol in Andaman?

Yes, in licensed restaurants, resorts and beach clubs. Most mid-range and premium resorts serve beer, wine and standard spirits. Maldives resorts serve alcohol at their bars; local islands are dry.

Which is more family-friendly — Andaman or Maldives?

Andaman is more family-friendly for Indian families. Variety of activities (Cellular Jail, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat, Baratang limestone caves, Ross Island), Indian food everywhere, easier medical access, and the cost for a family of four is roughly 1/3 of an equivalent Maldives trip. Maldives is a better fit for couples-only honeymoons.

What is the best time to visit Andaman vs Maldives?

Andaman is best from November to mid-May. Maldives dry season is also November to April. Both share a similar peak window. The Maldives monsoon (May–October) is wetter and seaplane cancellations are common. Andaman monsoon ferries still run with private operators but visibility drops for diving.
