Thinking of Bringing Your Kids to Andaman? A Local Parent's Guide.
Is Andaman a good choice for a family holiday? As locals, we say yes! It’s a giant natural playground. Here’s our advice for a smooth, fun, and memorable trip to the islands with your children.

"Is it a good idea to bring our kids to Andaman?"
We get this question a lot from friends and visitors. The short answer is a big, resounding YES! Forget the idea that the Andamans are just for honeymooners or scuba divers. This place is a giant, natural playground, and we see families making incredible memories here all the time. It just takes a little bit of smart planning to make sure your trip is smooth and fun for everyone, from the littlest toddlers to the pickiest teens.
Traveling with kids is a different ball game, we know. You worry about safety, food, and keeping them entertained. But honestly, the islands are more family-friendly than you might think. The key is to slow down, forget a packed itinerary, and just enjoy the simple things – like watching your kid’s face light up at the sight of a million tiny crabs scurrying across the sand.
Where to Go: Best Islands for Families
Not all islands are created equal when you have kids in tow. We’d suggest sticking to the main tourist circuit, especially for your first family trip. It’s well-connected and has all the facilities you’ll need.
Port Blair: You’ll land here, and it’s a great base for a day or two. It’s the most "city-like" place in the Andamans, which means easier access to ATMs, pharmacies, and bigger shops. You can explore the Cellular Jail (the Light and Sound show might be a bit intense for very young children, but older kids find it fascinating), the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum with its huge whale skeleton, and the Anthropological Museum. It’s a good, gentle start to the trip.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep): This is probably where you’ll spend most of your time. The beaches here are famous for a reason. While Radhanagar Beach is stunning, Kalapathar Beach is often calmer and less crowded, making it fantastic for families. The water is shallow for a good distance, and the rocks create little pools for kids to splash in. Elephant Beach is another winner, known for its clear, calm waters perfect for a first taste of snorkeling.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): Neil is smaller, quieter, and more laid-back than Havelock. It’s perfect if you want to unwind completely. The beaches like Bharatpur and Laxmanpur are beautiful and the pace of life is slower. The Natural Bridge formation is a must-see; kids love the treasure hunt of spotting sea cucumbers, starfish, and tiny fish in the rock pools at low tide.
Fun-tastic Activities for the Whole Crew
Beach time is great, but you'll need a few other tricks up your sleeve. Luckily, Andaman delivers.
One of the absolute best things to do with kids who are too young for snorkeling is a glass-bottom boat ride. You can find them at places like Elephant Beach or Jolly Buoy Island. It’s a fantastic way for them to see the coral and colourful fish without having to get into deep water. My own nephew still talks about the "Nemo fish" he saw on his first ride.
Another family favourite is a trip to Chidiya Tapu, near Port Blair, for sunset. It’s known as the "Bird Island," and while you might see some birds, the real star is the spectacular sunset over the water. The drive there is scenic, and it’s a relaxed evening out.
Don't underestimate the simple joy of just exploring. Renting a car for a day in Havelock or Neil lets you hop between beaches at your own pace, stopping for coconut water whenever the mood strikes. It gives you the freedom to head back to the hotel for that all-important afternoon nap without being tied to a tour schedule.
FAQs
Q: Is it safe to travel to the Andamans with a toddler? A: Absolutely. The main tourist areas are very safe. Just take the usual precautions: watch them near water, keep them hydrated, and protect them from the sun and mosquitoes. The local people are incredibly friendly and welcoming towards children.
Q: What’s the best time of year for a family trip? A: We’d recommend the dry season, which runs from October to May. The weather is pleasant, the seas are calm, and all the ferries and activities are running reliably. The monsoon (June to September) can bring heavy rain and rough seas, leading to cancellations.
Q: Are good medical facilities available? A: Port Blair has the best hospital (G.B. Pant Hospital) with good facilities. Havelock and Neil have smaller primary health centres for basic issues. For any serious concerns, you’d head back to Port Blair. It's always a good idea to carry a basic first-aid kit with essentials for your kids.
Q: Can I find baby food and diapers on the islands? A: You can find basics like diapers, wipes, and some formula brands in Port Blair quite easily. In Havelock and Neil, the selection is much more limited and expensive. We strongly advise packing enough of your preferred brands of baby food, formula, and any specific supplies to last your entire trip.
