Cellular Jail, Port Blair — timings, tickets and the light & sound show

Cellular Jail is the one Port Blair sight nobody should skip, and the light & sound show in the central courtyard is the thing that stays with people. It is also the most commonly mistimed part of an Andaman itinerary — the museum shuts in the afternoon and reopens for the show, and the English show runs only once on select evenings.

How to sequence it on arrival day

Flights into Port Blair land in the morning. Cellular Jail plus the evening show is the correct arrival-day plan — it needs no ferry, no permit, and it fills the exact window when you cannot leave for another island.

  • Land 10:00–12:00 → hotel check-in → jail museum at 14:00 → Corbyn's Cove at 16:00 → show at 18:00
  • Do not attempt Havelock on arrival day unless you land before 08:30
  • Book show seats the same morning; evening slots sell out in December–January

Which show to book

  • The Hindi show is the original score and the fuller production
  • The English narration runs on limited evenings — check at the ticket counter that morning
  • Central block seating faces the banyan tree the narrative is built around; side tiers see less
  • Carry a light layer — the courtyard is open-air and gets breezy

What to see inside

  • The surviving three wings of the original seven, and the central watchtower
  • Veer Savarkar's cell on the third floor of the first wing
  • The gallows chamber and the oil mill in the rear yard
  • The photo gallery and the freedom-fighter records room — the best-curated part

Frequently asked questions

What are the Cellular Jail light and sound show timings?

The first show is usually at about 18:00 and the second at about 19:15, running 45–55 minutes. Hindi runs daily; English is scheduled on select evenings only, so confirm at the counter on the day.

How much is the Cellular Jail entry ticket?

Availability of online booking has been inconsistent. The reliable route is to buy at the counter the same morning, or have your operator hold seats — we do this for our guests as standard.

Yes for the museum and the show, though the subject matter is heavy. The show is in the open air and finishes by about 19:00, which works with most children's schedules.
