Diglipur

North Andaman, turtles and the highest peak in the islands.

Ideal nights
2 to 3 nights, and only on longer trips
Best time to go
December to March for turtle nesting; November to April otherwise.

Diglipur is the far north — around 300 km from Port Blair — and almost nobody goes, which is precisely the point. Ross and Smith Islands are joined by a natural sand bar you can walk across. Saddle Peak is the highest point in the Andamans. Kalipur beach has nesting turtles between December and March. Roads are long and infrastructure is basic, so this suits travellers with time and tolerance rather than first-timers on a five day trip.

What it's actually good for

  • Ross and Smith Islands sand bar
  • Saddle Peak National Park trek
  • Turtle nesting at Kalipur (Dec-Mar)
  • Alfred Caves and Kalpong River
  • Almost no crowds, at any time of year

How to reach

By road from Port Blair (10 to 12 hours) or overnight government ferry. Best combined with Rangat or Mayabunder.
